I’ve looked into all kinds of omega-3 fish oils, and have come to a conclusion.
Whether you are buying fish oil softgels or liquid fish oils, there are only three things you need to know in finding a top quality brand of fish oil.
1. Buy molecularly distilled fish oil–this is a must.
Really. If you are going to take a daily supplement of fish oil, you need to take on that is not going to expose you to the risks associated with ingesting environmental contaminants (such as mercury, toxins, pesticides, PCB’s , and about 30 other possible offenders).
Molecularly distilled fish oils undergo a process to take out any contaminants and leave behind pure fish oil. The oil you buy should say on the label that it’s molecularly distilled, and verified by an independent lab to be free of unwanted chemicals.
2. Get enteric coated softgels. If you want to avoid fishy odors and fish “aftertaste” with the oils you take, then get an enteric coated fish oil This kind of softgel breaks up in your small intestine, not your stomach. Because of this fact, you won’t get any fishy “burps” or repeating flavors.
This may seem like a minor detail, but taking fish oil softgels that aren’t enteric coated, really is unpleasant.
3. Take a combined total of 1,000 mg EPA and DHA each day. Look on the label. If the total DHA and EPA per capsule is 200 mg, you’ll need to take five per day to reach your recommended total of 1,000 mg EPA+DHA each day.
Some softgels can get you up to the desired 1,000 mg in as few as two softgels per day. This matters when shopping for fish oil, because some people think price is the only factor in buying something like this. In fact, some 120 capsule bottles will last nearly twice as long as other 120 count bottles, simply based on the amount of EPA/DHA delivered per softgel.
This is kind of brief, really, but it covers the basics about choosing a fish oil softgel that delivers the goods and works like it should.
Remember, 1,000 mg combined DHA/EPA is the daily dose that health professionals recognize as therapeutic and beneficial to your health.
If you have questions about fish oil, ask your family doctor or health expert to give you further guidance.
Be happy and healthy, always!
